Moles are blemishes of various sizes and colours that are often commonly seen on the body or face. Almost everyone has at least one or more moles on their skin and nearly all of them are www.mediglow.ie harmless.
Moles occur when cells in the skin grow in a cluster instead of being spread throughout the skin. Moles are usually pigmented, often a brownish colour, although some might be darker or skin-coloured. They might be flat or raised, smooth or rough, and some have hair growing from them. They are usually circular or oval with a smooth edge.
Society unfairly criticizes and makes fun of people with moles, especially on the face. Movies and TV shows over the years often seem to characterise the baddies, the wicked people and witches with moles and warts on their face.
Some celebrities, film actors, actresses, models and singers have defining moles (or ‘beauty spots’ as some call them) on their faces and bodies, and some stars opt to keep their moles, although these moles are most probably small, neat and unobtrusive. It wouldn’t be as alluring if a supermodel had a big, dark brown, hairy mole on her face, would it? On the other hand, some celebrities have had a mole removal procedure.
Moles might be irritating, annoying and even painful and they can really affect the self-esteem. It could also be very irritating when moles catch on jewellery and clothes, and shaving could be very risky, trying to shave around the mole without catching it. Unlike a concealed mole on your back or leg, a facial mole or those on the neck, are out there for everyone to see. And, as with spots and pimples, it would seem that it’s an involuntary reflex to touch them, as if to check that they are still there! You can try to hide them under make-up, but you are still very much aware that they are still there… lurking.
